Battery testing and grading

Know what every battery is worth, in the car or out of it.

SPEX tells you what a battery is really worth and whether it is safe, in minutes, with the battery inside or outside the car.

Why state of health is not enough

Two batteries with the same figure can have very different futures.

Most battery checks report a single state of health percentage taken from the car's own system. The Pack Health Index combines several independent measures of condition, including how quickly the battery is ageing, into one score.

SPEX rapid assessment

More than 150 parameters in under 60 seconds.

A portable tool that connects directly to the battery rather than through the vehicle's diagnostic port.

In the vehicle

Decide before it comes out

Owners, recyclers and insurers can decide what to do with a battery before it is removed.

Out of the vehicle

Assess extracted batteries

SPEX also assesses batteries already removed, which diagnostic port tools cannot do.

Safety first

Every assessment begins with a safety check. A battery showing a serious safety warning fails automatically, whatever its other results.

The A to E grade

As easy to read as an energy label.

Every assessed battery receives a plain-English Allye battery health report with a grade from A to E.

A

Excellent, suited to demanding second-life use.

B

Good.

C

Fair, suited to lighter-duty use.

D

Needs further testing before any reuse.

E

Unsuitable for reuse and routed to recycling.

Detailed pack testing

A complete picture of the next life.

Batteries that pass the rapid assessment can undergo full charge and discharge cycling in our dedicated test facility, using the same power equipment as our deployed MAX systems. This measures real capacity, resistance, efficiency and temperature behaviour, and checks how reliable the battery's own data is.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask

How do you test an EV battery that has been removed from the car?

SPEX connects directly to the battery rather than through the vehicle's diagnostic port, so it can assess batteries that are already out of the car, reading more than 150 parameters in under 60 seconds.

Is state of health a reliable measure of a used EV battery?

On its own, no. Two batteries with the same state of health can have very different futures. The Pack Health Index combines several independent measures of condition, including how quickly the battery is ageing, into one score and an A to E grade.
